Odisha: Retired ACTO, spouse get 3-year jail in DA case

Bhubaneswar: A retired Assistant Commercial Tax Officer (ACTO) and his spouse have been convicted by the Special Vigilance Court in Odisha’s Berhampur for possessing disproportionate assets.

The Special Vigilance Judge at Berhampur convicted Ramesh Chandra Behera, former ACTO at a unified check gate at Chikiti in Ganjam and his spouse Mamata Behera for possessing disproportionate assets (DA) to the tune of Rs 34,32,966, said an official of the anti-corruption body today.

The court sentenced the retired the ACTO and his spouse to three years of rigorous imprisonment under various Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 each on Behera and his spouse. Non-payment of the penalty amount would invite further imprisonment for three months to the convicted persons, said the court.

The Vigilance department will move the competent authority for stoppage of pensions of the retired ACTO following his conviction in the DA case, added the official.
