Odisha rights panel awards Rs 10 lakh to kin of K’mal fake encounter victim

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today directed the state government to pay Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of the couple killed in a fake encounter at Pangalpadar village under Kotagada police limits in Kandhamal district in 2015.

The OHRC rapping the state government for squarely failing to prevent violation of basic human rights of the elderly tribal couple directed the former to pay the compensation award of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of Dubeswar Nayak and his wife Bubhudi.

The rights panel has sought compliance from the state government within eight weeks.

On July 26, 2015, Dubeswar Nayak and his wife Bubhudi Nayak of Pangalpadar village had climbed a hillock near their village to speak to their son over a mobile phone because of poor signal inside the village.

While they were trying to connect with their son over the mobile phone, security personnel suspecting them to be Maoists fired at them killing them on the spot.
