Odisha rivers in spate, communication disrupted

Incessant and heavy rains in most parts of Odisha since the last two days have triggered a flood situation.

Road communication in Kalahandi district has been disrupted as floodwater of Hati river was overflowing at a height of two feet over the Hati bridge at Junagarh since Sunday evening.

In Nayagarh district, most parts of the low lying areas have been submerged by floodwater of Kaligiri and Brutanga rivers as a result of which nearly 14,000 people of Bhapur and Gania blocks have been surrounded by floodwater since last three days.

Road communication to these blocks has been severed due to overflowing of floodwater on Gania-Rasanga and Mahamaya-Kadua roads, reports said.

Reports from Nabarangpur district said that road communication from the district to Umerkote and Kalahandi district have been disrupted as floodwaters of Indravadi, Bhaskel, Tel, Turi, Makia, Dhanasuli, Angi and Petaphula have submerged the Nabarangpur-Umerkote road.

Besides, overflowing of floodwater of Hati river at a height of four feet has also severed road connection between Nabarangpur and Kalahandi.

In Bhadrak district, floodwater of Baitarani was flowing near the danger level at Akhuapada while floodwater of its tributaries — Kochila, Genguti, Kandia, Reba and Kapali — were also on the rise due to incessant rains in the district since last two days.

In Baleswar district, floodwater of Jalaka river was flowing over the danger level. Apprehending that floodwater of the river could enter Sibagadia and Dholasahi villages of Baharda and Mathani panchayats, the Water Resources department has stacked sand bags along the river embankment.

Meanwhile, people along the Mahanadi river embankment in Badamba, Tigiria and Narsinghpur in Cuttack district are in a state of panic following alarming rise in the water level of the river.

Floodwater of the river has submerged thousands of hectares of agricultural land in Banki sub division.

More than 5000 people of Sukhuapada village in Similipur panchayat have been surrounded by floodwater for the last seven days.

Besides, road communication between Talabasta panchayat and Banki has been severed due to overflowing of floodwater at a height of three feet on the road.

Till reports last came in, water level of Mahanadi at Banki was 6.5 metres while the danger level is 7.78 metres.

In Puri district, floodwater of Daya river was flowing above the danger level at Kanas.

Besides, water level of Rajua, Malaguni, Makara, Kasia and Luna rivers was flowing just below the danger level.

Floodwaters have submergedthousands of hectares of paddy fields in Dokanda, Balipatna, Tarapada, Badasa, Baidyanathpatna, Kakharubasta, Gadabalabhadrapur, Nanakera, Similipatna, Tentulimula, Atharabatia and Sabalanga villages.

Reports from Angul district said road communication between Athmallik and Boinda has been cut off as a temporary bridge at Sanahula was swept away by the overflowing water of Sanahula nullah.

Besides, road communication between Athmallik and Boudh has also been cut off as the Mahanadi floodwater was overflowing 15 feet over Manitri and Khadarapada bridges.

Meanwhile, the Hirakud Dam authorities have regulated the release of floodwater of Mahanadi after closing 19 gates.

As per the latest report, water level of the dam stood at 621.58 feet on Sunday evening.

The reservoir was receiving 201016 cusecs of water per second while 78,915 cusecs of water per second from the five gates, 12,103 cusecs per second from the powerhouse channel and 3011 cusecs of water per second from the canal were being released during the period.

Sources in the dam control room said there has been 16.66 cm rainfall in the upper catchments and 44.14 cm rainfall in the lower catchments of the river in the last 24 hours.
