Bhubaneswar: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) said on Wednesday that it has set a new benchmark with its blast furnace achieving the highest single-day hot metal production.
The blast furnace-1 of RSP, a unit of SAIL, produced 3,503 tonnes of hot metal on August 17, thereby clocking its best single-day performance. The furnace’s earlier record of 3,457 tonnes was achieved on February 12, as per a statement.
The plant commenced operations in 1959 with blast furnace-1, named Parvati. The iconic furnace was rebuilt and upgraded in 2018, it said.
With a useful volume of 1,710 cubic metres and a working volume of 1,471 cubic metres, the capacity of the furnace has been enhanced to 2,900 tonnes per day. However, the furnace has been consistently producing 3,000 tonnes of hot metal per day with a pulverised coal injection (PCI) rate of 100 kg per tonne of hot metal.
On August 17, blast furnace-5 and blast furnace-1 together produced 11,713 tonnes of hot metal, which is the second-best single-day production with two furnaces operating, the statement said.
