The state government had initiated redevelopment work at the shrine under Samaleswari Temple Area Management and Local Economy Initiatives (SAMALEI) in 2021. It had sanctioned Rs 200 crore for the project, sources said.

The redevelopment project includes beautification and peripheral development at the temple, development of heritage corridor, state-of-the-art amenities for pilgrims and Mahanadi riverfront development work.

Senior officials of the state government have visited the shrine several times in the recent past to take stock of the project work.

Samaleswari temple had been constructed by Chouhan king Balram Dev of Sambalpur. It is one of the most revered shrines in western Odisha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
