Odisha: Sarpanch held for rape bid on woman inmate at quarantine centre

Bhubaneswar: A Sarpanch was arrested and forwarded to court today for allegedly making sexual advancement towards a woman migrant returnee at a quarantine centre in Dunguripali of Sonepur district.

As per reports, the Sarpanch of Andhari Banzi panchayat under Dunguripali block, Banamali Sa made indecent gestures and sexual advancement towards a woman inmate at the quarantine centre. A case was registered on June 7 under Sections 354(A)/354(D)/294/506/34 of IPC against the Sarpanch on basis of a complaint filed at Rampur Police station.

After the incident, the Sarpanch escaped to Bhubaneswar. When the Sonepur Police got a tip-off about the Sarpanch’s presence in Bhubaneswar, the Sonepur sought the help of Bhubaneswar DCP to arrest the accused.

Accordingly, the Special Squad of the Commissionerate Police traced Banamali from DHPL Sahoo Complex, Patia yesterday night. The accused was then handed over to the Sonepur Police.

Today the accused was forwarded to the court. As per the latest reports, the accused is in judicial custody.
