Odisha schools to be rewarded for quality education

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government is mulling to introduce a new programme in state-run schools to improve quality education.

There is a proposal to launch ‘School Certification Programme’ in all the government schools from this academic session 2019-20 to recognise and reward schools for progress, informed Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) State Project Director Jyoti Prakash Das.

“Under this programme, the schools will be awarded if students are able to achieve grade-level competencies,” he said adding “To achieve this objective, schools can nominate themselves to be certified and an assessment will be conducted by a team to assess and certify schools for the purpose.”

Meanwhile, the School & Mass Education authorities are planning to resume the flagship programme ‘Learning Enhancement Programme’ (LEP) that comprises of Ujjwal and Utthan in all elementary schools after a two-month long summer vacation.

The Ujjwal programme is designed for primary classes between 2 and 5 and Utthan for Upper Primary (UP) classes (6-8). The key objective of these programmes is to bring students to grade-appropriate learning level before teaching them advanced topics in the syllabus of their grade. The LEP will be conducted for all periods for 40 days after schools reopen and one period per day for the rest of the academic year, the School & Mass Education Department said in a release.

The teachers of elementary schools have been trained extensively for launching of the programme. The district, block and cluster level officers have also been trained to monitor schools online and support teachers in classroom transaction.

The state has strived to ensure that all schools are provided books before the schools reopen. On account of the Cyclone FANI that has affected some schools in the coastal districts, the department has taken steps to make arrangements for students in nearby schools to ensure no derailment in education for any student.

Moreover, to curb absenteeism a Maha-Parent Teacher’s Meeting (PTM) will be held in schools after summer vacation to inform parents about the benefits of LEP and importance of sending students to school regularly.
