Odisha: Seven more gates of Hirakud dam opened today

Sambalpur: In view of heavy water inflow into Hirakud reservoir following incessant rain in upper catchment areas of Mahanadi River, the authorities decided to open seven more gates today to release excess floodwater.

In order to keep reservoir level maintained at 619-620 ft level we are going to open 7 more gates, informed the Hirakud Dam authorities.

With opening of seven more gates, about 2.2 lakh cusec water is being discharged from the dam through 14 gates.

As per the sources in the Water Resources Department, the water level at Hirakud dam was 620.89 ft by 8.00 am on August 19 against total storage capacity of 630 ft. The expected maximum flood flow at Mundali point will be about 4 lakh cusec today.
