Odisha social media reacts to GI tag for Banglar Rasogolla
Bhubaneswar: Odisha took to social media to unleash their feelings as West Bengal successfully bagged the GI tag for Banglar Rasogolla on World Diabetes Day, amidst the ongoing rasogola tussle between Odisha and Bengal.
Finance and Excise Minister of Odisha, Sashibhusan Behera termed this as an insult to Odisha and vehemently stated that rasogola is associated with Jagannath culture and Odia people’s sentiments and that the government will oppose it. Meanwhile, the government of Odisha has brought out a press release clarifying that Banglar Rasogolla is specific to West Bengal and Odisha government is in the process of obtaining GI registration for Odishara Rasagola.
Odisha Government is in process of obtaining GI tag for Odishara Rasagolla. It originated in #Odisha and is offered at Jagannath Temple as part of religious rituals by people of Odisha since centuries. pic.twitter.com/zk0tOAxj7c

Odia netizens on Facebook and Twitter vented their emotions and were heartbroken as Bengalis relished sweet victory.
While some castigated the Odisha government…
Dear @Naveen_Odisha why don’t you congratulate Bengal for getting GI Status by shaming us, if you do not have any evidence #Rasagola

Dear @CMO_Odisha, it seems our presentation was weak over https://t.co/GpddNowcLA come instead of solid evidence we lost GI tag of #Rasagola to West Bengal. https://t.co/UfXXsvtM8K

Sir, This is too much.?
What exactly Govt was doing for last two years? Why it was not filed yet? And please don’t worry. We are just few twitter users. It will not impact ur vote count.
Btw please remove one “l” 4m “Rasagolla” & make it “Rasagola”.— ଆଶିଷ କୁମାର ନାୟକ (@ashishkumar_tw) November 14, 2017
Sir, Odia twitteratti has been furnishing many facts, details which can make our case strong in order to get GI tag for Rasagola. As and when possible we have tried to assert that the sweet belongs to Odisha. While we were doing this what was your team doing about it?

… others targated Bengalis
Guys, the claim of having won the ‘GI battle’ is as fake as their claim that Rasagola originated in Bengal. #ExposeTheFakeClaim #RasaogolaIsFromOdisha pic.twitter.com/6tptGgOOC7

If you want to eat authentic #Rasagola and not #Rasagolla then come to Odisha. #RasagolaControversy Misinformation and false GI tags will not hide the truth about where the Rasagola was born.

Meanwhile West Bengal is preparing to get GI tags of Banglar Biriyani, Banglar Vada Pav, Banglar Pizza, Banglar Burger. #rosogolla#Rasagola#RasagolaControversy

There were some downright hilarious posts as well…
We let Bengalis win Rasgulla war because today is Children’s Day. 😉#rasgulla#ChildrensDay

And then, there were the ones who believed that all is not lost and that the battle for origin of the syrupy delight is still on:
Make it as Rasagola. In history,we have never heard as Odishara rasagola. Don’t dilute the issue. We want GI tag on Rasagola. Refute the claim of West Bengal. GI tag can be withdrawn as in case of Jamnagar Resources. #GItag for Rasagola

It remains to be seen as to what steps Odisha government now takes to secure a GI tag for our claim of the rasogola in order to get recognition for the sweet integral to our cultural identity.
