Speaker asks govt to reply on Sishu Bhawan infant deaths

Speaker Niranjan Pujari today  issued a ruling to the Odisha government directing it to give a statement on the recent spate of infant deaths at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics (SVPPGIP), the premier paediatrics hospital in Odisha also known as Sishu Bhawan, Cuttack.

Assembly small sizeExpressing concern over the spate of infant deaths at the SVPPGIP due to alleged negligence of doctors, nurses and other staff which now stands at 26 in the last five days members from the treasury and opposition benches raised the issue during Zero Hour.

While ruling party member Ranendra Pratap Swain sought a status report from the Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Opposition Congress and BJP demanded immediate action in the matter. The Opposition demanded a statement from the Minister concerned on the issue. A total of 12 members both from the opposition and treasury benches raised the issue in the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Health department is holding a high-level meeting at the state secretariat here on the issue.

The meeting chaired by Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak is being attended by the Health secretary Arati Ahuja, NRHM director Rupa Mishra, RDC (central) Bikash Mohapatra, collector Cuttack, superintendent SVPPGIP, DMET, local MLA Prabhat Biswal and departmental officials.

The meeting is discussing and analyzing the two reports submitted by the CDMO and ADM Cuttack on the infant deaths.
