Odisha sprinter Punga Soren bags gold in Khelo India School Games

Bhubaneswar: A young sprinter from Odisha made the state proud by clinching first gold medal in the 110 metre hurdles in first Khelo India School Games in New Delhi.

Soren bagged the gold for the State with a timing of 14.12 seconds on Friday.

Aditya Prakash of Jharkhand and G Nishanthraja of Tamil Nadu won silver and bronze medals in the event with timings of 14.30 and 14.57 seconds respectively at the event.

On the other hand, Odisha’s only international swimmer, Pratyasa Ray bagged her second bronze medal in Khelo India School Games on Saturday.

She clocked 2:34.44 seconds to win the bronze in the girls 200 metre back stroke event. Earlier, she won a bronze medal in the 100 metre backstroke event clocking 1:10.05 seconds.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the young talents on their achievements at Khelo India School Games, a National Programme for Development of Sports.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Patnaik tweeted, “Congratulations to young sprinter Punga Soren on bringing the first gold medal for Odisha winning boys 110m hurdles & swimmer Pratyasa Ray bagging two bronze medals at #KheloIndia School Games in Delhi. Odisha is proud of your achievements.”
