Odisha: Student to be declared ‘dropout’ if absent for 30 days in school

Bhubaneswar: Taking strong initiative to minimize school dropouts ahead of beginning of this year’s academic session, the authorities have decided to declare a student having less attendance as ‘dropout’ in school.

If a student will be absent for 30 days in school, he/she will be regarded as dropout. Arrangement will be made for his/her re-admission if he/she comes to school after a gap of one month, said Odisha Primary Education Programme Authority (OPEPA).

As per the decision by the government to bring reforms in primary education, the school teachers will meet the guardian of the student if he/she remains absent for a week. If the absence continues for 10 days, the headmaster of the school will discuss the matter with the guardian. In case, if the student is absent for 15 days, the school managing committee members will meet the guardian. After 18 days, the Cluster Resource Center Coordinator (CRCC) or Block Resource Center Coordinator (BRCC) will conduct counseling on the student after meeting the guardian. Later, the student will be declared as dropout for absence of 30 days.

An annual schedule has been prepared for providing the dropouts a special training for six months. The training equipment has been changed for the students of Class I to III from this year. The OPEPA has asked the State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT) to make necessary changes in training equipment for the students of Class IV and V between April and May.

The school authorities have been asked to create awareness programme in seasonal hostels to check school dropouts in Bargarh, Balangir, Kalahandi and Nuapada districts.
