Hundreds of students of the Gandhi Institute for Technology (GIFT) located in Gangapada area on the outskirts of the city ransacked the causality ward of the Capital hospital alleging medical negligence which caused the student’s death.

The deceased identified as Ankur Mohanty, who hails from Bhimpur area under Airfield police limits, was a B Tech third year student of the college.

“Ankur was admitted in the hospital after an accident in Pokhariput area in the city. We brought him to the hospital in a PCR van at around 5.30pm today. He was attended to in the causality ward. He was in good condition and was able to recognise all his friends,” said a batch mate of the deceased.

“But after an hour, the doctor informed that the patient was no more. It was quite confusing,” the student added.

The students also alleged that the doctors didn’t allow them to see the body and took it for autopsy, which triggered tension and led to ransacking of the casualty ward of the hospital.

Soon after the incident, Zonal ACP Aseem Panda along with Capital police station IIC Manas Gadanaik rushed to the spot along with two platoons of police forces to calm down the irate students.

On the other hand, Capital hospital staff refuted the allegations and claimed, Ankur was declared dead on arrival.
