Odisha teacher held for spreading disinformation on COVID-19

Rayagada: The police today arrested a teacher on charges of spreading misleading information on novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Rayagada Town Police Station limits today.

Informing this to media persons, Rayagada SP Saravana Vivek M said the accused teacher is V.P. Srinivas Rao and a resident of Pitamahal area. Following his arrest, the accused was forwarded to the court.

As per reports, Srinivas Rao yesterday circulated a piece of information on social media saying that a corona contracted persons was staying in JK Pur area. The police and administration swung into action and investigated the matter.

When the piece of information was found to be false, the police launched a manhunt to nab the accused. Today morning the police arrested the teacher from his residence. Suspecting involvement of more persons in the case, the Rayagada Town Police Station officials are investigating the matter.

As the government has banned dissemination of wrong information on COVID-19, strict action will be taken against those involved in such criminal activities, the Rayagada SP said.

The Muniguda Police, on March 13, arrested one Satyanarayan Samal of Baliguda in Kandhamal district for spreading rumours about COVID-19 on social media.
