Odisha to close 18 jails. Here’s why

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government decided to close as many as 18 jails in view of less number of prisoners lodged in those confinements.

With the shutdown of 18 jails in first phase, the inmates and jail employees will be shifted to other prisons.

The move came to lessen the administrative and other expenditures in the jails where inadequate number of prisoners are lodged across Odisha.

The authorities have decided to construct schools, colleges and other official establishments in place of the jails that will be closed soon.

Notably, there are total 91 jails including one open jail in Odisha with capacity of around 20,000 prisoners.
