Odisha to have bicameral legislature!

Bhubaneswar: The Centre may soon give its approval for creation of a Legislative Council in Odisha.

The Centre is likely to introduce a Bill in this regard in the Parliament during the Winter Session, said a source.

The Odisha Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution from creation of a Legislative Council for the state on September 6, 2018. Subsequently, the state government had sent a proposal in this regard to the Centre.

“Odisha will have a bicameral legislature if a Bill in this regard gets the Presidential assent after due passage in the both houses of Parliament,” said a political observer.

Notably, the governments of Odisha and three others states—West Bengal, Rajasthan and Assam—have sent proposals to the Centre for creation of Legislative Councils.

At present, six states in India—Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and Karnataka—have Legislative councils.
