Bhubaneswar: Odisha has secured the top position in the country followed by Kerala in planting trees, informed Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi here today.

A total of 1.48 lakh trees have been planted in Odisha in the last one year, whereas Kerala has planted only 48,000 trees during the period, the CM said.

Speaking to reporters, he said that the government is focusing on growing many cherry blossom plants in the state.

"Cherry Blossom is cultivated more in Japan. We will grow the plant widely in Daringibadi, commonly known as Kashmir of Odisha," Majhi said.

Stressing the significance of palm trees, he said that the plant is the best shield against lightning.

The government will make efforts to make the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'successful' here, he added.
