Rourkela: A four-year-old girl met her watery grave yesterday afternoon while learning swimming in a pool at Mayfair Hockey Village near Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium and under Chhend police limits in Rourkela City of Sundargarh district. However, her family alleged today that the minor died due to the neglect of her trainer.

The deceased was identified as the daughter of Sunny Singh, a resident of Sector 9 locality of Rourkela.

According to a source, the minor had come to the Hockey Village along with her mother as part of the former’s regular training. After the swimming class was over, the girl’s mother inquired about her and asked the trainer following a frantic search at all probable locations. The trainer replied that she had gone to a nearby washroom. However, the woman did not even find her daughter in the washroom.

Later, the minor victim’s mother went to the swimming pool and found her in it. The girl was rescued from the water and immediately taken to the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela for treatment. However, doctors at the health facility declared the child ‘received dead’.

Father of the child lodged an FIR the next morning. Acting on the FIR, local police reached the hospital and seized the body, and sent it for post-mortem. Police have initiated a probe into the death.
