Odisha: Transgender leader Meera Parida joins BJD

Bhubaneswar: Transgender leader and social activist Meera parida today joined Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Meera along with her hundreds of supporters joined the party in presence of party supremo Naveen Patnaik at his residence here.

The president of All Odisha Kinnar Mahasangha and founding member of SAKHA hails from Gadatara village under Begunia block in Khurda district.

Worth mentioning, a transgender woman Kajal Nayak will be contesting from Korei Assembly constituency in Jajpur district as a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate. This is a first in the political history of Odisha that persons from third gender category are being fielded in the electoral battle.

It may be recalled here that Merra along with members of the community had in 2017 petitioned the State Election Commission for making provisions allowing them to contest elections.
