Odisha: Two held for posing as cops to extort money

Rayagada: The police today arrested two persons for allegedly trying to extort money from goods vehicles while impersonating as cops in Chandili area of Rayagada district late last night.

While a pick-up van was going towards Nabarangpur from Berhampur, two persons on a motorcycle intercepted the vehicle at Mukundapur ghati. When the driver, Nilamadhab Patnaik did not stop the pick-up van and drove away, the two motorcyclists chased for eight kms and intercepted the goods vehicle.

They asked Nilamadhab to show the vehicle documents identifying themselves as police. When he gave the documents, they snatched the papers and demanded money. Also, they beat up the vehicle helper, Kuna Bisoyi. Somehow Nilamadhab convinced the two persons impersonating as police to give money from an ATM in JKPur.

Accordingly, the two motorcyclists followed the pick-up van up to the ATM. In the meantime, Nilamadhab called the police control room and narrated the matter.

Following the complaint, a team of police personnel of Chandili police station laid a trap and captured one of the two motorcyclists as soon as they reached. Later the police nabbed the other miscreant after tracking his mobile phone.

Official sources said police probe is underway to find out whether the miscreants are involved in any other cases.
