Odisha University of Health Sciences comes up in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: The much-awaited Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS) was established in the capital city here on the occasion of Panchayati Raj Diwas and the 107th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik today.

The university started functioning from its temporary building at Sishu Bhawan Square in the city here.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by the sub-section (1) of Section 3 of Odisha University of Health Sciences Act, 2021, the state government do hereby appoint 5th March 2023 as the date on which there shall be established in the state of Odisha a university by the name ‘the Odisha University of Health Sciences’, the headquarters of which shall be at Bhubaneswar,” said a notification issued by the Health and Family Welfare department today.

The university will provide uniform and quality medical education in undergraduate and postgraduate courses of Allopathy, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, laboratory technology and all other paramedical sciences in the state, said an official.

“The OUHS has been established to enhance the quality of medical education in Odisha and boost patient care and research in the state,” said the official.

The move aims at streamlining medical education system in the state. Medical and allied health science colleges will come under the ambit of the OUHS, he added.

The OUHS will be the affiliating university covering more than 200 hundred medical and paramedical colleges in Odisha.

The state government is taking steps to evolve a common curricula and academic calendars for medical colleges that will come under the OUHS, sources said.

Earlier, all government medical colleges, Ayurvedic, homeopathy, nursing and paramedical institutions were coming under different general universities across Odisha.
