In a shocking incident a Post Graduate (PG) girl student of Odisha’s Sambalpur University today allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself to death in her hostel room at the varsity campus.

The student identified as Swatipriya Sahu hailing from Badmal area in Balangir district allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her hostel room in Silver Jubilee hostel using her dupatta after fellow boarders left to attend their classes this morning, reports said.

Swatipriya was a first year student of the Post Graduate department of English of the university.

The reason behind her suicide is not yet known. Her fellow boarders claimed that she was in the pink of mood yesterday evening.

On being informed, Burla police rushed to the spot and took her to the VSS Medical College and Hospital here where she was declared dead by the doctors.

Her body has been kept at the Casualty department of the hospital waiting for the arrival of her parents after which police will conduct post-mortem. Her mobile call records are being examined by the police to ascertain the possible reason behind her suicide, police sources said.

A pall of gloom prevailed at the University campus following her death. The girl's friends, classmates and fellow boarders are now at the hospital waiting for her parents to come from Balangir.
