Jajpur: A team of Odisha Vigilance sleuths today caught red-handed and later arrested a senior clerk (in-charge) for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 in Jajpur town of this district. The clerk identified as Subrat Kumar Kanungo is presently working in the District Welfare Office.

Kanungo had demanded a total of Rs 25,000 from a local beneficiary to pass an ex-gratia amount of Rs 75,000. The woman Tunia Jena previously paid the clerk a part of the demanded bribe to the tune of Rs 15,000. As per the earlier finalised deal, Kanungo accepted Rs 10,000 from the complainant leading to the seizure of money from his possession and arrest of the senior clerk.

“We had laid a trap to nab the clerk red-handed and accordingly he was caught,” an official said.

The ex-gratia money was sent by the State Government to the District Welfare Office, the official added.

It is pertinent to mention, on December 11, another team of Vigilance sleuths had apprehended an amin identified as Sarbeswar Mohanty working in Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000.

The amin accepted the bribe from a complainant to furnish a favorable report to facilitate the sale of the latter’s house which was earlier approved by the BDA authorities.
