Senior Tripura-cadre IPS officer Joydeep Nayak wanted for his alleged involvement in a scam in Odisha has been arrested from Ghaziabad, state Vigilance Director RP Sharma informed today.
According to reports, Joydeep Nayak was apprehended by a special team of the Vigilance from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
He was produced before a local court there and brought to Odisha on a transit remand, sources said.
Odisha police produced Joydeep before the Ghaziabad CJM court which allowed the cops to take him on four-day transit remand.
Upon his arrival in Odisha capital, he will be taken to Cuttack where he will be produced before a court. Vigilance is likely to seek 10-day remand of the tainted cop, sources added.
Notably, five persons have already been arrested in connection with the scam. Earlier this month, Joydeep Nayak was suspended from the service for his alleged involvement in siphoning off Rs 88 lakh meant for the computer education of SC/ST students and self help groups (SHGs).
The officer, said to be the prime accused in the case, was on deputation to Odisha till December 2015.
During his tenure as the IG of SC & ST Protection Cell, HRPC, the scam allegedly took place in connivance with the staff of the department and private players.
According to reports, Nayak had undergone a ligament surgery on his leg at the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi and was discharged from the hospital on June 22. Since then, he was on the run and remained incommunicado.
