Bhubaneswar: A woman Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police landed in trouble after around 12 kg ganja was found from her scooter in Sonepur district of Odisha yesterday.

One Sangram Kardia (27) of Tevapadar village under Subalaya police limits in Sonepur was riding the scooter of Ulunda police ASI Smitarani Dash during the seizure of the contraband from the vehicle.

The police had intercepted Sangram with the scooter (OD-17-X-9771) at Budharaja Square in Sonepur during night patrolling on August 25.

The cops reportedly seized 12.6 kg ganja from the scooter while searching it. They also seized the scooter and arrested Sangram on charges of his involvement in illegal ganja trade.

The police, later, came to know that the woman ASI is the real owner of the scooter, sources said.

“During investigation, it was found that the scooter had been registered in the name of woman ASI Smitarani Dash. Our officials are probing the incident,” Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rajkishore Mishra.

Sonepur SP Amaresh Panda said Odisha Police will take action against the woman ASI if the probe establishes her involvement in illegal ganja trade.

The woman ASI, however, claimed her innocence in the incident. “Accused Sangram Kardia was known to me for the last few days. He had borrowed my scooter to travel to somewhere on an urgent work. I did not know that he would transport ganja in my scooter,” she said.
