Odisha: Woman carries mother’s body in trolley-rickshaw after denial of hearse van

Berhampur: A woman had to carry her mother’s body in a trolley-rickshaw in Berhampur town after authorities of MKCG Hospital denied her a hearse vehicle today afternoon.

The woman, Santoshini Behera and her brother Trinath Singh from Gate Bazaar area admitted their mother, Chandrama Singh at MKCG hospital after she complained of illness on Monday. However, Chandrama died while undergoing treatment at the hospital at 10 am today.

Santoshini and her brother were very poor and did not have enough money to arrange a hearse van. They requested the hospital authorities to provide a vehicle to carry their mother’s dead body. But the hospital authorities expressed their inability to provide a hearse vehicle as the sister-brother did not deposit the requisite money.

According to the government guidelines, someone has to deposit a certain amount to avail the hearse vehicle services.

Finding no other option, Santoshini and her brother took her mother’s body in a trolley-rickshaw from the hospital at around 3.30 pm today.
