Odisha women kill mother-in-law, dump body in pond

Pipili: In a heart-wrenching incident, an elderly woman was killed by her two daughter-in-laws over family dispute of Bastapada village under Satyabadi Tehsil in Puri district.

The incident that took place on July 30 came to the fore today after the two accused identified as Sandhya Maharana and Manasi Maharana, confessed to their crime during police interrogation.

Sources said the two accused used to fight with their mother-in-law Savitri Maharana, a widow, over trivial issues frequently. On July 30 night, the duo strangulated their mother-in-law to death when their husbands were away. They later threw the dead body in a pond backside of their house and lodged a missing complaint at Satyabadi police station. After five days, police recovered the dead body from the pond and sent it to hospital for post-mortem.

Today, the police arrested the two, who confessed to their crime during interrogation. The accused duo was later forwarded to court, said Krushna Chandra Sethi, IIC, Satyabadi police station.
