Bhubaneswar: A thirty-one-year-old man staged his own abduction to extort money from his family in Odisha’s Nuapada district.

Baikuntha Nayak, son of Jayram Nayak, of Boirabhadi village under Jonk police limits had orchestrated his own abduction on July 2 to get money from his family, said Nuapada SP Gundala Reddy Raghavendra today.

A few of Baikuntha’s friends had helped him in the fake abduction, added the SP.

Baikuntha’s younger brother Pabitra had availed loans to the tune of Rs 3 lakh from various online platforms some days ago. But, he could not repay the amount due to financial stress.

To bail out Pabitra, Baikuntha’s father arranged the money by mortgaging a piece of land. This had prompted Baikuntha to stage his own abduction to get some money from his father, said the SP.

As per the plan, some unidentified persons had kidnapped Baikuntha on July 2 and sought ransom from his family. They also released a morphed video of the abduction and subsequent torture of Baikuntha to build pressure on his family, revealed the SP.

Baikuntha’s family had lodged a complaint in this regard on July 6. The police subsequently launched a probe and solved the case, he added.
