Odisha: Youth killed in brutal attack; locals block NH demanding arrest of culprits

Nabarangpur: A youth of Gadabaguda area in Nabarangpur district was allegedly killed in a brutal attack by a group of villagers late last night.

Though the exact reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, family members of the deceased alleged that he was killed due to previous enmity.

As per reports, a group of over six miscreants attacked one Nizam Sheik with sharp weapons, including sword and iron rod near hotel Sahil late last night before fleeing the spot. Seeing him in a pool of blood, some locals called up police, who reached the spot and rushed him to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here. While one hand of the youth was chopped off, his body bore deep injury marks.

After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to SLN Medical College and Hospital in critical condition. However, he succumbed to injuries at the hospital at around 1 am.

Angry over the incident, locals blocked NH-26 by keeping the body on road in front of Nabarangpur police station and later at Macchiguda Chhak demanding immediate arrest of the culprits. Road traffic between Nabarangpur and Koraput and Kalahandi districts was disrupted for hours due to the blockade.

The agitators called off the protest after ADM Bhaskar Raita and Additional SP reached the spot and assured them of immediate arrest of all the accused. Till the last report was filed, four suspects were detained in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, brother of the deceased alleged that though his family had lodged a complaint with Nabarangpur police alleging threat to life, no action was taken by the cops which led to Nizam’s murder.
