Bhubaneswar: The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India granted autonomous status to State-run Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang for a period of ten years.
With getting autonomous status, the college authorities of IGIT can make syllabus for the students. The examinations will also be conducted by the institute. The students will get certificates from the college.
Earlier, the syllabus and examinations of IGIT were managed by the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT).
IGIT is second technical institute in Odisha to have been granted autonomous status by the UGC after Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla, said IGIT dean academic professor SN Mishra.
As IGIT is situated in an industrial area in Dhenkanal district, the syllabus for the courses offered in the college will be prepared in view of employment so that students can get jobs soon after studies. Initiatives will be taken to transform it into a leading educational institution in the State, he said.
IGIT, Sarang was established in the year 1982. Thousands of students have passed out from the institute in different trades of B.Tech courses here.
