Odisha’s Koraput records 15,000 lightning strikes in 7 minutes

Bhubaneswar: Koraput witnessed as many as 15,000 lightning strikes in just seven minutes as nor’wester rain lashed the southern Odisha district today.

Several areas of Koraput district including Borigumma, Jeypore, Koraput and Damanjodi witnessed the lightning strikes during the nor’wester rain, revealed the ‘Damini’ app of the Ministry of Earth Sciences today.

The IMD, meanwhile, predicted heavy rainfall in Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Balasore and Mayurbhanj district of Odisha on June 2 (Sunday).

As per the IMD prediction, thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind may occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi on Sunday.

This apart, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of South Odisha and at a few places over the districts of North Odisha on June 2, said the IMD regional centre here today.
