Sources said two Income Tax department officials visited his official residence here and served on him a demand notice of Rs 41 lakh towards income tax arrears for the last fiscal.

However, Rao in his reactions to the development told television channels over the phone that he was not at his home at that time and in the case of a notice his chartered would deal with it.

“If at all they have served a notice what’s the problem? I was not at home I had been to Puri. My chartered accountant will deal with it. There might be some arrears and they might have served the demand notice. I will comply with the demand notice be it for Rs 20 lakh or for Rs 40. What’s wrong in it?” he asked callers from television new channels over the phone in response to the development.

Rao had Monday filed his nomination papers as an official candidate of the BJD for the forthcoming July 11 Rajya Sabha polls.

Rao in the affidavit filed along with his nomination papers on Monday had stated that the combined value of his and his wife’s immoveable and moveable properties was Rs 36, 87, 47,000.

Before filing his nominations for the Rajya Sabha Rao was the deputy chairman of the State Planning Board.

Notably, Rao is a businessman with business interests in Visakhapatnam and has been closely associated with Biju Parivar for the last 40 years. Hailing from Telugu community, Rao’s nomination is considered as a ploy to checkmate Telugu Desam Party’s electoral moves in the state.
