Odisha’s SOA Varsity celebrates 66th Republic Day

Prof Khageswar Pradhan, Chancellor of Odisha’s SOA University, has urged upon students to be the catalyst of change in their endeavor to take the nation forward socially and economically.

Unfurling the tricolor and taking the salute at the 66th Republic Day celebration at the University stadium here on Monday, Prof. Pradhan said that students should first try to change themselves in their pursuit to change the society.

The chancellor informed that during the British rule, the freedom fighters had started observing January 26 as the Independence Day since 1930 after the British rejected their plea for attention to some demanding issues. But from January 26, 1950, it was celebrated as Independence day, he said.

Students from ten different institutes besides one contingent of NCC cadets participated in the march past commanded by Satish Kumar Samal and Suraj Kumar Panigrahi in the presence of the parade commander Rusi Patnaik.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Amit Banerjee, the Registrar Prof BB Pradhan, Deans of different institutes, faculty members and students were present.

A jury, comprising Air Vice Marshall (Dr) Sibaram Mohapara, Col SK Palo and Major Debasish Das, chose students from three institutes who were adjudged as the three best contingents in the parade.

The first prize was won by the students of Institute of Dental Sciences followed by those from the Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Sum Nursing College who were adjudged second and third respectively.

The Chancellor presented the trophies to the winners and also felicitated the jury members.

Students from different institutes staged a cultural program on the occasion.  Associate Professor Dr Jyoti Ranjan Das proposed the vote of thanks.
