Selvam Educational and Charitable Trust, which runs the Jarring-based Sardar Rajas Medical College (SRMC) in Odisha’s Kalahandi district during a hearing by a two-member division bench of the Supreme Court today, informed the court that it has deposited the Rs 2 crore as directed by it.

The apex court has posted the next date of hearing in the matter to the second week of August.

The apex court on May 9 this year had ordered Chennai-based Selvam Education Trust which is managing Sardar Rajas Medical College to deposit Rs 2 crore with the court’s registry by June 25 failing which non-bailable warrant (NBW) will be issued against it.

In an earlier hearing, the apex court had directed Selvam Educational and Charitable Trust to deposit Rs 2 crore within two weeks with the court’s registry. The registry was directed that the amount so deposited shall be kept in a short-term fixed deposit in the UCO Bank, Supreme Court Compound, New Delhi.

The bench had held that the Trust will have to shell out compensation for the 124 students. Besides, it had directed the three medical colleges to make sure these 124 students were provided all the requisite facilities and sought reports on compliance in two weeks.

While the Medical Council of India (MCI) had granted conditional approval to Sardar Rajas Medical College to admit 100 students for the 2013-14 academic year, the MCI later barred the college from admitting students as it failed to meet the MCI norms.

The students were relocated to other private colleges in the state following the court order.

Notably, the Selvam Educational and Charitable Trust had established the Sardar Rajas Medical College in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode through the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC).
