OHRC reprimands woman cop for assaulting youth inside PS in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has pulled up Sandhya Rani Jena, former Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of Patna police station in Keonjhar district, for allegedly assaulting a youth inside the police station.

The panel has recommended that Jena should neither be given any field duty nor be posted at any police station for a period of two years.

“Jena should be sent for training as to how to deal with the accused persons,” the commission added. She was earlier suspended by DGP Abhay over the incident.

In March, this year, a video had gone viral in which Jena was seen thrashing a youth with a stick inside the police station. One Raju Mohanta had lodged a complaint with the Patna police regarding a land dispute. He was allegedly called to the police station where he was thrashed by Jena before being forwarded to the court.

The commission had earlier directed the Home Secretary and the DGP to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to the youth by deducting the amount from the salary of the IIC.
