Ola celebrates Odisha transgender’s ‘independence’ on I-Day eve
Bhubaneswar: India’s ride-hailing firm, Ola, has come up with a unique gift for Odisha transgender Meghna Sahoo on the eve of Independence Day! The cab aggregator has made a video showing Meghna’s struggle against discrimination and finally becoming financially independent against all odds.
The Bengaluru-based company claimed 4th April, 2018 was Meghna’s Independence Day as she became the first transgender driver-partner with Ola on that day, a move which was hugely appreciated by one and all then.
Known for celebrating its driver partners’ true and stellar examples of customer service and bravery through a special video series, Ola has chosen Meghna for this Independence Day.
The cab aggregator posted the 2-minute long video (#MyIndependenceDay) on its official Twitter handle. Within hours, the post has garnered good amount of likes and retweets.

Meghna, who has an MBA in HR and Marketing, switched various jobs looking for an opportunity to be treated equally, had bought a Swift Dzire and got her commercial license to put her professional life in top gear.

Eight hours at the wheel now earns her around Rs 30,000/month. “Driving with Ola gives me independence and flexibility besides monetary benefits,” she had said then.
She further told: “I am able to play a role in enabling others to be more accepting and open towards transgenders.”
Meghna, who has also been working as a transgender rights activist, became the first transgender in the state to have got married to a man last year, who befriended her on Facebook.
After undergoing sex change operation five years ago, she chose 32-year-old Basudeba as her life partner, who works as a supervisor in a private security agency in the city.
Meghna was also in the news in May last year when she announced to contest Rajya Sabha elections from the State after BJD leader Bishnu Charan Das resigned from the Upper House.
Accompanied by few transgender women in a procession, Meghna then purchased the nomination form at Odisha Legislative Assembly office to file the nomination.
