Ollywood actor stirs controversy for act on Hindu deities

Plaint against Ollywood comedian Pragyan for ‘hurting Hindu sentiments’

Bhubaneswar: Well-known stand-up comedian and Ollywood actor Pragyan Ranjan Khatua has courted controversy for his act on a television channel that reportedly hurt sentiments of the Hindus.

The youth wing of Viswa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, today submitted a memorandum to the Bhubaneswar DCP alleging the actor of hurting the sentiments of the Hindus through his performance aired on a private television channel.

“An actor leaves an impact on the society, whether its good or bad. In the recent past, we observed that famous actor Pragyan Khatua has made a mockery of Hindu deities through his acts on television. This has hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Today, we submitted a memorandum to the DCP seeking action against the actor,” said Pravat Tripathy, Zilla Sanyojak of Bajrang Dal.

In the backdrop of the development, the actor issued a video statement in his defense.

“Firstly, I beg apology if I have hurt anyone. I would like to tell everyone that we act according to the script. I do not write them. I would like to say that I am a believer of Lord Jagannath. My brothers in Bajrang Dal are upset with me. I once again offer my apologies to them,” the comic actor expressed.

The leader of the Hindu organization welcomed the gesture of the actor and said, “Thank You Pragyan Bhai that you apologized. We request you not to make a mockery of Hindu deities in future. We pray Lord Jagannath for your bright acting career.”

The 34-year-old actor hails from Sahanajpur in Cuttack district and has constructed a Jagannath temple in his village. He debuted in Ollywood with ‘Salam Cinema’. Though the regional industry has a long list of comedians, Pragyan has made a name for himself as a comic actor. He is equally popular on television, apart from the celluloid.
