The helper of a tourist bus from neighbouring West Bengal, who was critically injured after the vehicle rammed into an iron rod laden truck from the rear near Sunakhania on the Odisha-West Bengal border in the wee hours today succumbed to his injuries while he was being shifted to a Kolkata-based hospital for better treatment.

Helper of the ill-fated tourist bus Raja Saftar (30) was grievously wounded as an iron rod tore through his chest and came out on the other side after the bus driver on account of poor visibility due to fog rammed into a stationary iron-rod laden truck parked on the road, reports said.

With the rod stuck in Saftar’s body, the driver of the bus drove straight to the district headquarters hospital here where men from the Fire Brigade after an hour and a half’s hard efforts were able to cut the rod using cutters, reports added.

According to reports, while attempt was being made at the district headquarters hospital here to remove the iron rod from Saftar’s body his condition deteriorated and he was advised to shift to Kolkata for better treatment.

However, he succumbed to his injuries while he was on his way to Kolkata, the reports added.
