One more farmer commits suicide in Odisha

Even as Opposition and the ruling party are busy trading charges over the specter of drought and subsequent farmer suicides; drought package announced by the Odisha government, one more farmer committed suicide in Tihidi block of Bhadrak district.

The farmer identified as Aanakar Behera allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday night after being unable to cope up with the burden of debt he had incurred.

Aanakar’s family alleged that he had committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday night in his house.

The deceased farmer had cultivated crops in three acres of land as a sharecropper apart from cultivating 12 gunths of land belonging to him.

Aanakar had availed loans totaling about Rs 3 lakh from banks, primary coop society and individuals to meet expenses of cultivation, daughter’s marriage and education of his children and was under severe stress for quite some time with his crops wilting due to scanty rainfall and remote prospects of repaying his debts, local sources said.
