The Odisha government today appointed a three-member team of officials to make on-spot-visits to the districts of Bolangir and Kalahandi to inquire into the alleged distress sale of onions by farmers.

“Three officers, one each from Horticulture Department, MARKFED and Food Supplies Department will make field visits to Kalahandi and Bolangir. They will visit fields and mandis (markets) to make an assessment of the real ground position there,” informed Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Surjya Narayan Patro to reporters after a review meeting on distress sale of onions at the State Secretariat here today.

Patro said Collectors of the respective districts have been intimated on this account.

The team will submit its report to the state government by May 27, after that the state government will take a call on next steps to be taken.

“They will submit their report to the state government by May 27 after that the state government will decide on the next step,” the Minister said.

“The government has formed a committee which will submit its report by May 27 after that the committee will meet again. Whatever decision is taken at the meeting and instructions are given to us we will adhere to that,” said Sudhakar Panda, General Secretary of Federation of All Odisha Traders' Associations (FAOTA).
