Oppn ST&SC MLAs stage dharna in Odisha Assly

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, May 11:

Demanding implementation of the Odisha Reservation of Vacancies (ORV) Act in the field of higher education, legislators belonging to the Congress and the BJP again sat on a dharna in front of the Chief Minister’s chamber in the state Assembly here today.

ORV dharna

Congress and BJP legislators from the scheduled tribe (ST) and scheduled caste (SC) communities staged a dharna alleging that the state government despite assurance was not implementing 38% reservation for ST&SC communities in medical and engineering courses.

In accordance with the Speaker’s ruling Tribal Welfare Minister Sudam Marandi and later SC&ST Development Minister Lal Bihari Himrika spoke to the protesting legislators.

However, the protesting MLAs did not relent.

Earlier, last week Congress and BJP MLAs had sat on a dharna on the same demand and after talks with Speaker Niranjan Pujari had withdrawn their stir. However, they again resorted to dharna as the government failed in fulfilling their demands. Former legislators of the community have also taken part in the dharna.
