Opposition creates uproar in Odisha Assembly over rising rape cases

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly today witnessed ruckus by Opposition Congress and BJP members over the rising rape cases in the state.

As the House assembled for the day, several Congress and BJP MLAs rushed to the well of the House and created uproar demanding statement of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over the issue.

Amid pandemonium, Speaker Pradip Amat adjourned the House till 11.30 am. Noisy scenes prevailed after the House reassembled following which the Speaker again adjourned the House till 12.50 pm and further till 3 pm.

“Rape cases are increasing across the state. It seems the culprits are not afraid of the law. The Chief Minister should make a statement in the House in this regard,” said Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra outside the House.

BJP MLA Rabi Naik said while minors are being raped, the BJD government has failed to book the culprits and ensure justice to the victims.

“We are all saddened by such incidents. Strong action will be taken against the culprits. A discussion over the issue will be held in the House on April 26,” said government chief whip Amar Prasad Satpathy outside the House.
