OPTCL DGM gets 5-yr jail term for graft

Baripada: Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) Mayurbhanj branch DGM Yashwant Choudhry was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) today for demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 3,000 around five years ago.

Hearing the 2017 graft case, Special Vigilance Judge Prasanna Panda convicted Choudhry and awarded him five years of jail term. The Judge also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him for the offence. The official will spend one year more in jail, if he fails to pay the penalty.

Worth mentioning, the DGM had demanded Rs 5,000 bribe from one Kartikeswar Dutta, a local resident, to make a bill for a rented vehicle at his office. Later, a trap was laid and Choudhry was caught red-handed by the Baripada Vigilance while he was accepting Rs 3,000 at his office on October 25, 2017.

In another development, the Champua Additional District and Sessions Court of Keonjhar district  awarded eight years of rigorous imprisonment to a father-son duo for killing a local in 2016. Reportedly, the two two convicted–Basant Behera and Banka Behera– had killed one Manjit Singh by hitting his head with a stone on October 30, 2016.
