Orange alert: Thunderstorm, lightning very likely in Odisha districts on March 19 & 20

Bhubaneswar: With a trough running from Jharkhand to north Coastal Andhra Pradesh across Odisha, thunderstorm with lightning, and gusty surface wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph and hail very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Odisha on March 19 & March 20, India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted today.

People are advised to keep watch on weather and take safe shelter during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas. Also, harvesting of Rabi crops may be regulated judiciously and farmers are advised to use hail nets to protect vegetables and crops.

In its mid-day bulletin, the IMD stated, “Maximum temperatures observed marked fall at one or two places over the districts of South Interior Odisha, appreciable fall at a few places over the districts of Interior Odisha and at one or two places over the districts of South Coastal Odisha, appreciable rise at one or two places over the districts of South Coastal Odisha and no large change at elsewhere over the districts of Odisha. They were appreciably below normal at a few places over the districts of Interior Odisha, below normal at a few places and normal at elsewhere over the districts of Odisha.”

For Monday (Valid up to 0830 hrs IST of 19.03.2024)

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of north interior Odisha, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Cuttack and at a few places over rest districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning (Be Updated) –

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Dhenkanal.

Also thunderstorm with lightning is very likely at one or two places likely over districts of Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Subarnapur and Boudh.

For Tuesday (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 19.03.2024 to 0830 hrs IST of 20.03.2024)

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha.

Orange Warning (Be Prepared) –

Thunderstorm with lightning, and gusty surface wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph and hail are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Bolangir, Subarnapur, Kalahandi, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Jajpur.

Also thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm) at one or two places is likely over districts of Cuttack, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Khordha and Dhenkanal.

Yellow Warning (Be Updated) –

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Deogarh and thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts of Odisha.
