The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Crime Branch police have arrested the Chairman of Oscar Group of Companies--Prabhas Chandra Rout—from New Delhi for allegedly duping investors, police sources said today.
“The Oscar Group Chairman Prabhas Chandra Rout has been arrested from New Delhi in connection with chit fund scam to the tune of Rs 230 crore. He is being brought to Bhubaneswar on transit remand,” Crime Branch Special DG BK Sharma said.
According to sources, the realtor-turned-movie producer was residing in a temple in New Delhi on a fake identity.
Acting on specific inputs, the EOW raided the temple with the help of local police and arrested him.
Oscar Group had floated a chit fund company in 2010. The dubious firm was operating in Odisha, Gujarat and Maharashtra, sources added.
In March last year, scores of members of Kranti Odisha, a city-based civil society group, had staged a protest in front of the EOW office here demanding action against a public limited company ‘OSCAR’ for defrauding people to the tune of Rs 230 crore.
Based on the complaint, Crime Branch had registered a case in this conncetion.
Notably, Muna Patra, General Manager of the company was arrested earlier and is presently in jail.
