Over 2,400 SC, ST category students dropped out of schools in 8 years: Minister Saraka

Bhubaneswar: As many as 2,403 students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) have dropped out of Odisha schools in eight years owing to various reasons, ST and SC Development Minister Jagannath Saraka informed today.

Minister Saraka said this in the House of Legislative Assembly during its Monsoon Session while replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati.

A total of 2,014 SC and ST students have dropped out after passing in Class 10 exams and at least 3,476 students discontinued without pursuing their higher studies, the SC & ST Minister added.

“Many SC and ST students dropped out during the tough times of Covid-19 outbreak. In 2020, 247 under matriculate students dropped out. Similarly, 491 students discontinued studies after passing the matriculation exams,” Saraka stated in the House.

Likewise, in 2021, 172 SC and ST dropout students were under matriculates and 833 were matriculates. However, the number of under matriculate dropout students is 618 and matriculate students is 32 in 2022, the minister further said.
