Over 60 displaced slum dwellers held for attacking cops, CMC staff in Cuttack

Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police today detained over 60 slum dwellers, including 15 women on charges of attacking cops and Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) staff at Nuapada Balisahi under Madhupatna police station here on May 11.

It is pertinent to mention here that few displaced people, including children were injured after the tent they were staying in was blown away by thunderstorm and gusty wind on May 11.

On receiving information, when a team of Madhupatna police and CMC staff reached the spot, the angry slum dwellers allegedly attacked them. They also allegedly vandalized the police vehicle. Later, five platoons of police force were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control. After that, the Madhupatna police registered a case against the attackers in the connection.

The CMC had rehabilitated around 1200 families, evicted from the slums located at Chhatra Bazaar Behera Sahi, Ranihat Sagadia Sahi, Pilgrim Road Das Sahi, Malgodown Jalua Sahi for the expansion of Taladanda canal road, and accommodated them in  two tents at Balisahi for a temporary period.

However, one of the tents was uprooted due to the sudden thunderworm and gusty wind on May 11 causing injuries to few inhabitants, including children. Irate over this, a group of slum dwellers staged protest by blocking roads. During the protest, they had attacked the cops and CMC staff, who were  deployed at the site for rescue operation.
