Over 800 cattle rescued, 4 detained in smuggling case from Odisha’s Balasore

Sources said on Saturday, five containers from Laxmannath toll gate and three from Gopinathpur village were heading towards the Odisha-WB border with over 800 cattle when police intercepted them after a getting a tip -off. 

Jaleswar: Police today rescued over 800 cattle and detained four persons for alleged smuggling across Odisha-West Bengal border at Jaleswar in Balasore district here.

The district administration, locals claim, is turning a blind eye to the illicit activity as smuggling of cattle across the border through Jaleswar on NH 60 continues to be reported from the area.

Sources said on Saturday, five containers from Laxmannath toll gate and three from Gopinathpur village were heading towards the Odisha-WB border with over 800 cattle when police intercepted them after a getting a tip -off.

While the vehicles were seized and the cattle rescued, police has detained four persons in this connection. As per reports, this route is often used to smuggle livestock. A case in this regard has been registered and an investigation initiated into the matter, police said.

However, questions are being raised on the police management as there are outposts at Haladipada, Rupsa, Basta and Jaleswar Rajghat but even then the eight containers managed to take flout the security.
