Bhubaneswar, Apr 25:

Paddy procurement for the Rabi season will begin in 19 districts of Odisha from May 1 and will continue till June 30, informed Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Secretary Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra to reporters after a meeting of the paddy procurement committee held at the State Secretariat here.

While a target to procure paddy at the rate of 26 quintals per acre has been fixed for the districts of Bargarh, Sambalpur and Subarbanpur, the target for procurement in the remaining 16 districts have been fixed at the rate of 24 quintals per acre, the Secretary added.

This year the state will achieve a new record in paddy procurement, Mohapatra stated.

“In the past years’ procurement was limited to 51-52 lakh tonnes. We expect a combined procurement for the Kharif and Rabi seasons somewhere around 60 lakh tonnes, which will be a record in itself. The government of India has given a month’s extension this year since procurement in coastal Odisha began late. In Kharif we are expecting to procure 44 lakh tonnes, till now we have procured 42 lakh tonnes. With six more days left we are expecting to procure around 44 lakh tonnes,” he clarified.
