Paddy procurement for Kharif extended till Apr 30 in Odisha

The last date for paddy procurement for the Kharif season in the state has been extended till April 30, informed Bijay Kumar Prusty, Joint Secretary in the department of Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs here today.

“Paddy procurement in the state for the Kharif season was earlier till the end of March. Government of India has allowed us to extend it till April 30 after accepting a proposal made by the state government in this regard,” the Joint Secretary said.

Informing about the progress made in the procurement of paddy for the Kharif season Prusty stated: “Paddy procurement for the Kharif season started in the state in Bargarh district on November 29 last year. Currently, out of 30 districts paddy procurement is in progress in 29 districts barring Kandhamal. It will begin in Kandhamal district within next week.”

Paddy worth about Rs 2562 crore weighing over 17.45 lakh tonnes has been procured till date across 29 districts in the state; he informed adding that Rs 2012 crore has been credited to bank accounts of farmers.

The Joint Secretary said this was for the first time the state government has directly transferred value of paddy procured to the bank accounts of the farmers.

“This year procurement of paddy has been five percent more as compared to last year. Last year 16.63 lakh tonnes of paddy was procured. We will get 11.87 lakh tonnes of rice from the paddy procured this year. We have already got 2, 46,490 tonnes of rice. While we had got 11 percent yield last year, it is 21 percent this year. The state government is emphasizing on rice yield. Millers are delivering rice to the government after processing paddy on a monthly wise basis. The state government is very strict on this account,” Prusty revealed.
